Course description
This course is intended to introduce students to the legal aspects of oil and natural gas production and highlight the issues a practicing legal advisor is regularly asked to discuss with oil and gas companies. The course will cover some industry background (e.g., significance of oil and gas in today’s economy, basics of geology, a non-technical discussion of oil and gas production technologies) and, by building on this background, address various topics regarding the regulation and practical legal aspects of how the upstream oil and gas industry works.
Course outline
In addition to hearing presentations from the instructor on various topics, students will be required to participate in group assignments relating to drafting and negotiating simple agreements and/or other instruments that relate to the topics discussed during the course. The planned agenda for class meeting is the following:
- Introduction, History of the Oil and Gas Industry
- History of the Oil and Gas Industry
- Basic Geology and Production Methods
- Resource Ownership and Licensing Regimes
- Overview of he Permitting Regime in Hungary
- Exploration and Production Operations and Joint venture Structuring
- Exploration and Production Related Transactions
- Case study/ Negotiation Exercise.
Learning Out comes
By the end of the course, Participants would be able to;
- Gain knowledge on oil and gas legal frameworks
- Review petroleum contract structures that governments and oil companies use to grant petroleum rights and govern petroleum activities.
- Analyze key Petroleum agreements relating to exploration, development and marketing of oil and gas.
- Fast-track understanding of the oil and gas value chain.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the domestic legal regime.
- Explain and analyze key legal responsibilities and rights under the law currently in place.
- Demonstrate analytical and research skills in oil and gas regulatory practices regionally and globally.
- Identify the gaps in the regulatory structure and propose remedial provisions to be considered for mitigating the shortcomings in the law.
